In November 2022, a fire in Wulumuqi, Xinjiang resulted in 10 deaths and 9 injuries, sparking the “White Paper Movement.” People across China took to the streets to protest and mourn, including a large crowd on Urumqi Middle Road in Shanghai. A Chinese youth who participated in the protests, Chen Pinlin, released a documentary over an hour long on YouTube titled “Wulumuqi Road” on the first anniversary of the movement. In January of this year, they were reportedly arrested and detained on charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” and their case has been transferred to the prosecutor’s office for indictment. Chen stated that the Shanghai protest was their first participation in a political event in China, and they attempted to fully present in the documentary the emotional journey that led people to protest against the dynamic zero-COVID policy. They also mentioned, “The more the government misleads, forgets, and censors, the more we need to speak out, remind, and remember.” They urged people to remember the Blank Paper, remember the Tiananmen Square protests, remember the Cultural Revolution, remember three years of the panemicr: “Remembering the ugliness allows us to aspire towards the light, and I hope that China can soon welcome its own dawn.” – inmediahk.net
